12 Jun 1966
The main party of the Base Support Flight departed Sydney, bound for Saigon. An advance party of seven personnel departed on 12 May 1966. Their role was to provide domestic services – barracks, catering, motor transport – and administrative services as required by the RAAF in South Vietnam. Until this point, the RAAF presence at Vung Tau had comprised a single flight of Caribou transports, but the arrival of a second flying squadron – No 9 Squadron operating Iroquois helicopters – meant that the level of support provided needed to be upgraded.
In 1968, Base Support Flight was redesignated as No. 1 Operational Support Unit. It operated until February 1972.
