Media are invited to view an F-35A Lightning II aircraft from Number 2 Operational Conversion Unit (2OCU) as part of a stop-over at Cairns International Airport on Friday 6 December 2024.
The aircraft is participating in Exercise High Sierra, the final training phase for new fifth generation fast jet pilots.
The visit will involve landing, refuelling and a static display to enable local airport operators, emergency services and community leaders to understand the specific requirements of hosting military aircraft.
Media will be able to interview the Commanding Officer of Number Two Operational Conversion Unit, Wing Commander Phil Eldridge, and Director Regional Air Domain Posture Group Captain Stewart Dowrie.

The F-35 will conduct an extended low pass over the Northern Beaches while arriving in to the Cairns Airport – 10.50AM.
The jet will depart Cairns Airport at 1.15pm performing an extended low pass over the Cairns Esplanade before turning south.
All flying is subject to change, including short notice cancellation, due to variables such as air traffic control, weather and operational requirements.
