RAAF Base Williamtown Heritage Centre

The RAAF Williamtown Aviation Heritage Centre is operated on behalf of Air Force by Fighter World Inc, a not-for-profit organisation established in 1988.

The role of the RAAF Williamtown Aviation Heritage Centre is to preserve and display the history of military aviation in the Hunter/New England region, including the groups/wings/ squadrons currently and formerly based at locations such as RAAF Williamtown and Rathmines and wartime locations such as Tomaree, Ash Island, Swansea, and Catherine Hill Bay.

There are more than 15 aircraft on display, including a hand built Sopwith Camel, the Australian designed Avon Sabre, the French Dassault Mirage III, and the last Australian aircraft to shoot down an enemy jet fighter, the Gloster Meteor ‘Halestorm’, A77-851.

The collection also contains the first jet engine aircraft built in Australia; the de Havilland Vampire A79-1 and the recently retired F/A-18A ‘Worimi’ Hornet.

The RAAF Williamtown Aviation Heritage Centre is a ‘hands on' experience with exhibits across two hangars. Visitors can sit in the cockpit of a Macchi jet trainer, and Mirage jet fighter, or go for a ‘flight’ in our F/A-18 virtual-reality simulator!

Visit us to see, hear and feel our Air Force fighter jets! RAAF Williamtown Aviation Heritage Centre is located adjacent to the main runway at RAAF Williamtown where, on flying days, visitors can experience the F-35 Lightning II, Hawk 127, E-7A Wedgetail, and the Pilatus PC-21, as well as civilian jets from the nearby Newcastle airport.
